An Entire Community in a New Property Name

Student wins competition to name Anaheim affordable property

Jamboree presents prize to 5th grader for naming Rockwood Apartments affordable community in Anaheim.

In a world of multi-million dollar deals, dynamic real estate transactions, city planning and policy-making, Jamboree is having impact in local communities in some unconventional and creative ways.

Early in the planning stages of a new property in Anaheim, CA, Jamboree took an innovative approach to include the community in the conversation by holding a competition to name the new development. The competition was promoted among local fifth graders at Abraham Lincoln Elementary – a school directly across from the property under development on Lincoln Avenue – as a way to inspire creativity, build relationships, and bring a sense of ownership to the community.

Jamboree and Innovative Housing Opportunities, who narrowed the selections down to two, with the city selecting the winner, judged more than 120 student essays. We’re proud to introduce you to both Zila Olivo, our contest winner, and our newest property: Rockwood Apartments. Zila is shown above with Tammie Ledesma, Principal; Natalie Reider, Jamboree’s Director of Community Impact, Brittany Seniff, Project Manager I at Jamboree, Zila, her teacher Ms. Kessler, and her mother and brother. As her prize, Zila received two Amazon gift cards, a Kindle, and a certificate signed by Jamboree President Laura Archuleta. Our second runner-up, Andrew Ramus, will receive a hardhat and safety vest for his submission of “Anaheim Midpoint.”

Involving the neighborhood in naming a property is just one way we’re shifting the dial toward greater community collaboration and impact. In this instance, we not only educate children about the importance of their involvement in local community decisions, we begin to elevate the overall conversation to a higher level of support through partnership.
