SACRAMENTO, CA – West Gateway Place, the first shovel-ready housing development funded through the Strategic Growth Council’s highly competitive Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities Program, is breaking ground. Located at 820 Delta Lane in West Sacramento, West Gateway Place is being co-developed by the West Sacramento Housing Development Corporation and Jamboree Housing Corporation.
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Friday, August 14, from 10am to 12pm. Program participants include Assembly Member Kevin McCarty; Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency Secretary Anna Caballero; West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon, and executives from the Strategic Growth Council, Department of Housing and Community Development, Union Bank and Jamboree.
“As the City of West Sacramento reclaims its industrial waterfront as one of the region’s best opportunities for urban, sustainable living connected to jobs and services by walking, biking, and a forthcoming streetcar, we’re insistent that great places are mixed-income places,” said Mayor Christopher Cabaldon. “That’s why the West Gateway Place project makes high-quality, mixed-use affordable housing the centerpiece linking together three of the city’s urban revitalization districts.”
West Gateway Place will create new homes in a mixed-use, family-centered development. The development integrates bicycle and pedestrian paths that will make connecting to the community much easier without having to drive. These features will help reduce carbon pollution and avoid climate change impacts through transit-oriented location and energy-efficient design, creating a healthier living environment for all residents.
“West Gateway combines affordable housing with meaningful transportation options for residents that will help reduce vehicle miles and associated greenhouse gas emissions – exactly what is envisioned by the Affordable Housing Sustainable Communities program of California's Strategic Growth Council,” said Ken Alex, Chairman of the Strategic Growth Council.
Part of the California Climate Investments portfolio, the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities Program is implemented by the Department of Housing and Community Development in coordination with the Strategic Growth Council and California Air Resources Board. This program awards competitive grants and loans from the state’s greenhouse gas reduction fund proceeds, to projects that reduce vehicle miles travelled through low-carbon transportation options such as walking, biking and transit.
“California leads the nation in developing innovative ways to reduce greenhouse gases,” said Housing and Community Development Acting Director Susan Lea Riggs. “The Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities Program will continue to fund projects such as West Gateway Place all over the state by supporting smart compact development along transit corridors.”
West Gateway Place is planned as the first phase of a multigenerational community for seniors and families in West Sacramento’s Bridge District. This first phase consists of two buildings with 77 apartments and approximately 4,000 square feet of retail space. The residential units for this first phase will include one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments for large families earning between 30 and 60 percent of the area median household income. Completion is slated for late 2016.
