Sunswept is an acquisition/rehabilitation of an existing affordable housing apartment community in Garden Grove, CA. Jamboree partnered with Lebarge Industries on improvements to the property. Rehabilitation included onsite laundry facilities and covered parking for residents. Jamboree’s goals in improving the property were to upgrade the quality of the community while preserving affordability for this mixed-income property. Residents were temporarily relocated during the rehabilitation.
As part of the Buena Clinton neighborhood, Sunswept is located near three local schools and is a short walk to nearby shopping and dining. Jamboree has worked in conjunction with the City of Garden Grove, the county and other partners to revitalize this entire neighborhood and bring affordable housing to an area with real estate prices that are out of reach for many workforce families.
The rehabilitation of Sunswept was another step in an overall redevelopment plan that reflects the City of Garden Grove’s ongoing commitment to improve the Buena Clinton neighborhood. The area suffered from high poverty and crime rates, but a major revitalization effort begun in the late 1980s has turned around this neighborhood. Through the combined efforts of local government officials and residents, crime rates have dropped and quality of life for residents has improved.
City leaders drafted a comprehensive neighborhood revitalization strategy, and developed a public/private partnership to acquire and rehabilitate the buildings. The reality of that commitment now spans 20 years and Jamboree has been an integral part of that since 1996. The Sunswept renovation was another important part of these improvement efforts.
Residents at Sunswept – as well as Jamboree’s nearby Briar Crest, Grove Park and Rose Crest – actively participate at the award-winning Buena Clinton Youth & Family Center. Neighborhood programs and services include a parent advisory committee, parent volunteers, and parent education classes. A strong safety component includes neighborhood outreach meetings with local police, car seat safety, identify theft protection, renter's rights and much more.
