Kids Star Wars Summer Programs Shoot for the Stars

This summer, our Resident Services Centers have become an intergalactic basecamp for all sorts of creative and interactive activities. Star Wars Summer is a 10-week program that provides kids with fun and unique ways to engage with reading, fitness, team-building, STEM, arts, and other activities.

To prepare, kids have decorated their Jamboree community centers in the Star Wars theme, and painted custom t-shirts. Lesson plans include “Where’s Waldo” - a fun way to engage children and youth in reading, as educational achievement can be negatively impacted by summer learning loss. There are 66 teambuilding exercises. Science lessons focus on the four C’s of 21st Century Workplace Skills for Today’s Students: Collaboration, Communication, Critical thinking, and Creativity.

Our Resident Services Coordinators are commissioning these young heroes to join the battle of good versus evil, and bring forces of good into the world by doing a community service project at each property. Take a look at this fun, short summer superheroes video  our students created in last summer’s Superhero learning experience. We can’t wait to see what our young Jedi come up with this year.

Another highlight so far is the participation of Ms. Jan, a volunteer who serves almost daily at our community center in Jamboree’s Hastings Park property. She is such an integral part of creating a fun, caring environment that she’s earned the honorary title of Star Wars Princess Leia. “Princess Leia” first started coming to the center for computer help and job search assistance, and now serves other families and children by preparing activities and bringing them to life with the students. She also provides assistance in maintaining a safe and clean environment, a source and place of pride for all her neighbors at Hastings Park.

Interested in volunteering to be a force for good in a Jamboree property in your neighborhood? We're looking for volunteers and interns. Contact our Volunteer Manager, Annie Carney, for details.
